Smart AirCARE - Innovative Solution to Combat Air Pollution

Category

Product Development – Environment & Public Health

Background

Air pollution has become one of the most pressing challenges of our time, especially in urban centers where high population density and industrial activity amplify the problem. Poor air quality directly impacts human health, productivity, and overall quality of life. Recognizing this challenge, Scholar Lab Foundation, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, has developed an innovative solution — Smart AirCARE.

Objectives

  • To provide real-time air quality monitoring with high accuracy.

  • To empower individuals, communities, and policymakers with actionable data.

  • To contribute to healthier cities by raising awareness and driving behavior change.

  • To scale the solution for deployment in public spaces, industries, schools, and transport hubs.

Technology & Features

Smart AirCARE integrates advanced gas and particulate matter sensors with cutting-edge IoT capabilities. The system monitors:

  • Oxygen (O₂)

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

  • Formaldehyde (HCHO)

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) leaks

  • Particulate Matter (PM2.5, PM10)

  • Humidity and Temperature

Key Features:

  • Real-time monitoring & alerts for hazardous levels

  • Data-driven insights accessible to both individuals and institutions

  • Scalable design for public and private deployment

  • Low-cost, energy-efficient architecture suitable for Indian conditions

Current Deployment

The first deployment of Smart AirCARE is taking place at Sealdah Railway Station, Kolkata, one of the busiest transport hubs in India. This initiative demonstrates the system’s ability to manage high-traffic areas and provides a benchmark for commercialization and widespread adoption.

Impact Goals

  • Establish 100 monitoring units across urban centers within the next 3 years.

  • Provide real-time air quality data to thousands of daily commuters and residents.

  • Enable early interventions for public health protection and urban planning.

  • Support government, CSR, and NGOs in policy formulation and awareness campaigns.

Target Beneficiaries

  • Urban commuters and residents

  • Policymakers and urban planners

  • Healthcare organizations

  • Schools, colleges, and institutions located in polluted zones

  • Environmental NGOs and researchers

Call to Action

We invite government agencies, CSR partners, NGOs, and impact investors to join us in scaling this transformative innovation. Together, let’s make clean air a reality and build healthier, more resilient cities.
